SPORTS MURAL PROJECT

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS | Artists

The hosting of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal served as a catalyst for the development of sports infrastructure in Montreal and Quebec. The 1976 Olympics remain, to this day, the largest multisport event ever held in Canada. In the wake of the 1976 Olympics, sports federations consolidated their position and, over the years, developed a comprehensive support structure for the development of recreational, competitive, and elite sports deeply rooted in our city. Montréal remains a hub for the development of elite athletes, some of whom have stood on the top steps of the podium at both world championships and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

To mark this significant anniversary, the Montreal Sports Council is issuing a call for proposals for the creation of three murals to celebrate the Olympic legacy and the development of sports in Montreal over the past fifty years. Several locations (two outdoor and one indoor) have been identified in various neighborhoods across Montreal.

Each artist is invited to submit a proposal for a single canvas. Each mural has a different theme and a specific context for its creation.

Submissions will be evaluated based on the quality and relevance of the proposals, in relation to the artist’s artistic approach, as well as their originality. The artwork must be created exclusively on the surface identified and framed in the visuals.

The artist selected for each project must have submitted a proposal that aligns with the specified theme and must be available during the predetermined period for the creation of the mural.

Candidate eligibility:

  • Being eligible to work in Canada
  • Have at least 2 years of experience in mural production
  • Have a residential address within the City of Montreal

The artist will be paid a fee in accordance with the amounts listed below.

The application must include (in a single PDF file containing all the required documents):

  • Project reference number for the submission (on the cover page)
  • A rough sketch and detailed description of the proposed project;
  • Artist's portfolio (visual documentation with descriptions of previous projects);
  • A brief description of the artist’s artistic approach;
  • An up-to-date resume;
  • List of all certifications relevant to the performance of the assignment (operation of the aerial work platform, etc.)

The deadline for submitting applications is April 8 at 6:00 p.m.

For more information or to submit your application, please send an email to murale@conseilsportmontreal.ca. When submitting your application, please include the name of the location—one of the four projects for which you are applying—in the subject line of the email (e.g., “Olympic Stadium mural”), and be sure to attach your PDF application.
