Montreal is hosting Canada’s largest judo championship for the second year in a row, and the enthusiasm is impressive. Organized by Judo Canada, the Canadian Open Judo Championships drew approximately 1,250 athletes to the Pierre Charbonneau Sports Centre. The four days of competition were intense, with 1,500 bouts scheduled and 80 titles up for grabs.
On the four tatami mats, set up especially for the occasion, athletes of various weight classes and ages competed to win a medal for their province. Indeed, Canada’s 11 provinces came together for this joyful and competitive event.
Following a successful return to competition last year, Judo Canada is proud of the impressive turnout this year:
“This year we had the highest number of registrations. It’s a return to competition after COVID, and it’s been a huge success,” says Danielle Boulanger, Judo Canada’s member services manager.
Through various competitions (Ne-Waza, Shiai, Kata, etc.), judokas enjoy competing against one another across provinces. At these championships, participants of all skill levels are welcome, and “future Olympic athletes are also in attendance,” as Danielle Boulanger notes.
“The main goal of this competition is to ‘promote Canadian judo, demonstrate positive values, and come together to enjoy our sport,’” as Ms. Boulanger explains.
The weekend was a huge success, and judo fans were treated to a spectacular show! Notable medalists included Fréderic De Cardaillac (-66kg), Catherine Toshkov (-57kg), Alexandre Arencibia (-90kg), and Heidi Quach (-48kg). Two young cadets also distinguished themselves and were crowned Canadian champions: Marianna Karas (+70kg) and Yehor Paladii (-81kg). They now head to the Cadet World Championships!
In Ne Waza, Alexandria Lefort and Ludwing Ortiz shone by winning gold in their respective weight classes, but they were also crowned overall champions.
Judo Canada would like to thank the athletes, coaches, referees, parents, volunteers, as well as the many partners—particularly the City of Montreal—for making this event such a great success.
